Amazon defies spending slump

The world’s largest Internet retailer announced Wednesday that its second-quarter profit more than doubled over the same period a year ago, blowing past analysts’ expectations while shrugging off a slumping domestic economy as overseas consumers gobbled up video game consoles and other electronics.
