PayPal accounts compromised over 16 months; No response from eBay
Online payment service PayPal has had an exploit on its hands for at least 16 months and counting, and seems to have no resolution for it. A tipster forwarded us screenshots of the fraud, which involves a dummy subscription service to PayPal’s sister company Skype, all part of the eBay corporate family. Researchers Discover Why People Overbid on Ebay: Fear
Ever wondered what causes the spate of wild bidding in the last few minutes of an Ebay auction? Scientists say they now have answer: The irrational behavior is caused by people’s fear of losing, not their desire to win. While economists have recognized the concept of “loss aversion” for some time, a new set of experiments used brain scans and lab experiments to show how strongly the phenomenon plays out in auctions, and how it’s tied to overbidding.

From eBay to Bidtopia: Bargainland’s Success Story
Bargainland (which is also a company named for the popular eBay user ID), was greatly affected by changes at eBay. Policies on designer brand names, for example, limited Bargainland to listing only five of these items at a time, and in other instances, Bargainland was required to have a 98 or 99 percent positive feedback. St. James said that when you sell this type of product, even if you list every single item as damaged in the description, you just cannot achieve that high of a rating. The company also believed that eBay, through its new policy changes, was discouraging the types of listings that was the core of its business.
Irked by eBay, Some Sellers Trade Elsewhere
Some online retailers are moving away from eBay.
Irked by February’s changes in fees and the feedback-rating system, merchants who once sold wares exclusively at the online-auction site can now be found on a number of smaller alternative sites that have sprung up. With names like Wigix, Silkfair, Etsy and Oodle, these sites aim to offer more hand-holding for sellers — and charge lower fees — than the behemoth eBay.
