QXL (pron. "quick sell" – geddit?) has announced that it’s shutting its UK site as of May 30, and will not accept any more listings after May 9; your last day to bid or buy will be May 19.

And so draws to an end 11 years of the dream that had been fostered – that a British-built company might be able to take on the rest of the dot-com world.

eBay Eachnet Just Wants To Be Free In China

eBay Eachnet has announced immediate plans to exempt a series of important fees for users, a move that marks the beginning of the company’s shift to a free service pattern.

eBay Eachnet’s main Chinese competitor Taobao.com has maintained a leading market position since it was founded because of its menu of free goodies for users. Taobao is run by e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba.com.

Another eBay competitor enters the ring

The decision by eBay to require its vendors to use its PayPal payment system appears to have triggered something of a new spring for online trading sites.

First Melbourne-based online auction site OZtion reported that new listings on its site have exploded since the unpopular eBay announcement, and now a new internet trading site has announced its plan to take on the market leader.

OfferMe.com.au, which will launch in August, works like a kind of eBay in reverse.
